Mindfulness

Mindfulness is founded on Zen and modern Vipassana and is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something, which is a mental state achieved by focusing awareness on the present moment while calmly accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and sensations. While used as a therapeutic technique over the last several decades, Mindfulness as a spiritual practice has an ancient history dating back to the Vedas — and it strongly influenced Buddhism as one of the moral precepts. The goal of mindfulness as a spiritual practice is to understand the separation between mind and being to suspend all judgment and allow thoughts to arise and fall away without involvement or reaction as a pathway toward Nirvana. Mindfulness in contemporary society is utilized in mental health, medical, and wellness circles as a way to combat the stressors of modern life by gaining control over the mind.
